Funded by the Auckland Regional Council (ARC), all finalists will exhibit at Uxbridge – Howick’s creative centre in February.
ARC considers the Tamaki Estuary to be rare in Auckland, in that it’s a waterway strongly affected by development pressure and well-located to have high amenity value.
The council is involved in a broad range of initiatives to “remedy, mitigate and enhance the environmental condition of the estuary”, and wants entries to reflect this theme.
“The exhibition aims to raise the profile of the estuary and to protect it against pollution,” says Melissa Elliott, the curator at Uxbridge.
Artists can enter 2D and 3D pieces, and the only restriction is that each work cannot be more than 1.5m high or wide.
All of the entries must then go on sale, with unsold works returned to the artist.
Mrs Elliott says the annual event is well-attended and is a fantastic opportunity for emerging artists, with the winner getting the chance to host a solo exhibition at Uxbridge in 2011.
Last year, Howick’s Penny Lin was ecstatic to win the $4000 first prize and, with that amount doubling, Mrs Elliott anticipates more entrants this time.
