Laughs to help Samoa By JO TUAPAWA Wednesday, 04 November 2009 • Howick and Botany Times
Strictly Brown, described as “bigger, blacker and better than ever”, is a sizzling new comedy and variety show that hits the city on Sunday for one night as part of the Manukau Festival of Arts. Modelled on New York’s long-running Amateur Night at the Apollo – which launched the careers of legends such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and Lauryn Hill – Strictly Brown showcases six undiscovered acts who will compete for the grand prize, with the winner chosen on the night. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Red Cross’ tsunami appeal. It will be hosted by comedy crusader Vela Manusaute with stand-out performances from the Kila Kokonut Krew and an appearance by Robbie Magasiva, of Shortland Street and Bro’ Town fame. “We’ve had the Laughing Samoans and Flight of the Conchords, now, brace yourself for Pani and Pani,” say organisers. Described as the Pacific Rim’s answer to Kath and Kim, Pani and Pani are said to be “two all-time clueless characters”. |
