Scenes spark passion By SARAH MACDONALD Thursday, 23 November 2006 • Howick and Pakuranga Times IDYLLIC Auckland coastlines give a Dannemora artist limitless inspiration for his landscape masterpieces.
“I had my own framing business for a while when I came here and I met a lot of artists coming in to have their work framed,” he says. “That got my inspiration going again and that’s when I started painting seriously.” Working mainly in oils on canvas, Mr Hiew learned his skills in his homeland. “I’ve liked painting since I was very young,” he says. “I received some tuition from a teacher from Taiwan and I went on to study architectural drafting because I like drawings.” Despite his early foundations in the craft, Mr Hiew abandoned painting for several years. “When you look at Auckland, everything is very beautiful. The coastline of Auckland, the harbour, Rangitoto and the Gulf – there’s a lot of nice scenery. That’s what I like to paint.” Capturing the natural beauty has been a part of Mr Hiew’s life for eight years. “I paint regularly part time. I work during the day and have to find the balance to spend time with my family,” he says. “Eventually I would like to paint fulltime. I enjoy it.” Ten of Mr Hiew’s paintings will be on display at Devonport’s Art of This World gallery in an exhibition opening Saturday. Mr Hiew’s work features alongside fellow landscape painter Kelvin McMillan. “People like me who enjoy Auckland landscapes will have a good opportunity to buy an image of the scenery to put in their house,” says Mr Hiew. “They can look at it all the time then and enjoy it.” The exhibition runs until December 8 at Art Of This World gallery, Queens Parade, Devonport. |
