AN ACADEMY of top up and coming junior sailors will benefit from the sale of works by a collection of talented artists.
Whitford-based painter John Horton is one of 70 invited to showcase their abilities at the annual Bucklands Beach Yacht Club (BBYC) art exhibition.
Several hundred pieces will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds going to the club’s junior sailing academy.
Senior sailing instructor Ian Hopwood says the financial support is appreciated and will be put to good use. The academy caters for 200 sailors at any time, with nine presently in the youth development programme.
Mr Hopwood, of Cockle Bay, wants to double that number over the coming year. “The money will be spent on professional coaching,” he told the Times. “It will also help make sure the programme keeps going. We’ve got to have a source of income and need to pay a coach.”
Mr Horton says the exhibition will appeal to all tastes and is of an exceptional standard.
He brings many years of experience to his practise, as a member and past-president of the Howick Art Group, workshop tutor, and exhibitor for the New Zealand Fellowship of Artists.
“There are very competent hobby artists and some professionals invited to take part and the bulk of them are from around here,” he says. “The show covers a wide range of subjects and mediums.
“The paintings aren’t all marine-focused and will suit someone looking for a piece of art for their home.”
Mr Horton, who has been painting full-time for 32 years, will talk about his method and works, as well as how he got started in teaching, at the show opening. A number of artists in residence will be painting at the venue.
“It’s a chance to come along and talk to artists for tips and advice in a beautiful setting, and a great opportunity to see some excellent paintings,” says exhibition co-organiser Graham Pettett.
The showcase runs from November 2-6 at Bucklands Beach Yacht Club, Ara-Tai, Half Moon Bay. It’s open from 9am-6pm daily with the opening night tomorrow from 6.30pm.
