Janet Lilo exhibition, Papakura Art Gallery, 10 Averill Street, Papakura, Until June 16. JANET Lilo, who is of Maori, Niuean and Samoan descent, has exhibited her documentary-style artwork around New Zealand and overseas since graduating from AUT University with a master’s degree in art and design in 2007. She describes the objective of her practice as being to “engage, involve, research and educate diverse communities using visual art and creative processes as a platform for learning and empowerment”. WWJD marks Fresh Gallery Otara’s sixth anniversary and honours the work of the late Cook Islands curator, Jim Vivieaere, who passed away last year. Curated by Ema Tavola, the group exhibition represents the gallery’s pioneering role in showcasing new Pacific art that challenges, engages and reflects the unique socioeconomic context of South Auckland and Oceania. THE Camera Season Of Photography is a major showcase of some of the most remarkable wildlife and documentary photography from New Zealand and overseas. The exhibition opens with the Wildlife Photographer Of The Year 2011 display, drawing together 108 of the world’s best wildlife images, curated by London’s Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine. A FAMOUS Kiwi expatriate is the subject of the next film, entitled Gung Ho – Rewi Alley Of China, being shown at the popular Uxbridge cinema club. The documentary explores Rewi Alley’s experiences in China and his efforts in setting up an industrial co-op system, which he termed “gung-ho”, or work together. ACUTE Self is a new work by Interrupt Collective based on Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending Staircase, and investigates how a person occupies space as they move.The viewer’s movement generates a three-dimensional geometric shape, which changes its perspective as the subject moves from side to side.
Visitors to the show can investigate and interact with their own movement. Interrupt Collective includes Johann Nortje, Harry Silver, Stuart Foster, Angus Woodhams and works in collaboration with Ben Jack. Entry to the show is free.
